Summertime heat is when the big smallies go nuts eating everything they can. When I hit the river, I go to areas that have large pools with tail outs into another pool. The tail out can be shallow, 1-3 feet, to deeper 4-6 areas; it doesn't matter the depth. In fact, I like the shallower ones the best. You can fish for them anytime during the day, but early evening is when I like to do this. You can use any bait because these fish are actively feeding in these spots. Take your time and work the entire tail out, starting at the top of the pool below it, working upstream. I mostly drift fish, so I slowly work it down current or cross current. This is an area where I catch bigger bass during the summer months. ~ Pete
